Ask ten people in a British supermarket to name a rum and most will say Bacardi or Captain Morgan. They dominate the category, and because they are usually priced within a pound of each other, the choice is often made on habit rather than taste. That is a shame, because the two bottles are built for genuinely different drinks.
In short: Bacardi is a light, dry, filtered rum designed to disappear into a cocktail and let citrus and sugar do the talking. Captain Morgan Original Spiced Gold is a sweetened, spiced spirit designed to lead the drink. Neither is objectively better — but one is almost certainly better for you.

How They Behave in a Glass
Rum and cola
Captain Morgan is the crowd favourite here. Its vanilla and cinnamon reinforce the cola's own spicing, producing a rounder, sweeter drink. Bacardi with cola — a Cuba Libre when lime is added — is drier, sharper and considerably more refreshing over a long evening. If you find spiced rum and cola sickly by the second glass, switch to the white.
Rum and ginger
Ginger beer's heat suits the Captain's sweetness well. Bacardí Carta Oro, the gold expression, is the better Bacardi choice for this drink; the white can be overwhelmed.
Cocktails
For a Daiquiri, Mojito or Piña Colada there is no contest — these recipes were written for light Cuban-style rum, and Bacardi is the reference bottle. Spiced rum makes a Mojito taste muddled and confused. Captain Morgan comes into its own in punches and long autumnal drinks with apple juice or cider.
Sipping neat

In the UK both Bacardí Carta Blanca and Captain Morgan Original Spiced Gold are bottled at 37.5% ABV, so they are equally strong. Captain Morgan Dark Rum is also 37.5%, while Bacardí Ocho is 40% ABV. Strength is not the difference between them — sweetness and spicing are.
Which is better for rum and coke?
